An innovation during the 1950s was the split-level that organized interior space in a new way. Bedrooms and the bathroom were located upstairs, with the living areas on the main floor. A playroom or rumpus room, laundry, and utilities were in the basement next to the garage. This plan includes a half bath in the basement as well as access to the back yard through the laundry room ... all the better to reach the clothes line.
