The Home Building Plan Service dates back to 1946 and the end of World War II, when the company was established in Portland, Oregon. The company was just one of many that were created in response to a growing demand for house plans that would appeal to the millions of new, young families.
Little is actually known about the company itself and obviously will be a future research project as we ferret out the principal owners and designers.
The company remained in Portland producing a significant number of plan books and offering designs through such magazines as Popular Mechanics for more than 30 years. By the 1970s, the company was moved to Minnesota and eventually reconstituted as LifeStyle Home Design in 1994.
Despite the modest amount of information about the company, many of the plan books are floating about in antique stores and occasionally online. We have identified several plans here in Oregon with regional characteristics that are interesting and a little bit different from many of the contemporary plan books, so will be publishing images of the houses as we've found them as well as the plan book pages.
