Modern Colonial is probably the most accurate way to describe the Newport plan. It's side gable and moderate roof pitch, simple façade, but up-to-date presence was what many home buyers were looking for in the early 1950s. It was available in two- and three-bedroom versions. The largest version was exactly 1000 square feet. It's interesting to note that the 1951 version is "ranchified" by 1954 when appears with a lower roof pitch.
