Where
the American bathroom had been primarily functional with some design appeal
in previous decades, by the late 1950s and into the early '60s, it began
to shown a decided shift toward more opulent and fanciful decorative elements.
Finer tile work often in small mosaic patterns, exotic neo-stylistic
flourishes, and higher end fixtures with lots of bold color tended to be
the rule. And often, homeowners were enticed by homes with more than
one bathroom, especially in new construction.
