As might have been expected, the boom in family size during the 1950s combined with middle-class prosperity to make designing homes with at least two bathrooms or adding and extra bathroom to an existing home a de facto standard.
For the first few years of the 1950s, the style remained very similar to the bathrooms of the 1930s and 40s although modern shapes and styles started becoming more common.
After 1955 though, advertising evolved into a much more luxurious direction with art worthy of the 1920s gracing many products.
Our gallery and articles about 1950s bathrooms will explore the styles and materials used and discuss options for replicating mid-century design in today's bathrooms.
